The dream activity as the “new road” to consciousness

ABSTRACT
The scientific study of dreams, is now possible
from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience,
neurophysiology and clinical contributions of
neurological and psychiatric patients. Dreams
could be the frame in evolutionary perspective, that
may provide some explanation of its usefulness and
why that have been preserved in different animals,
including homo sapiens. From this perspective,
a model of virtual reality, where are deployed in
parallel several models to address the threats and
dangers of everyday life is proposed. Some people
have a kind of clarity of their dreams, that has
been called lucid dreams. This is a skill that can be
induced and represents another tool for the study
of dreams. Currently disputed model of activationsynthesis,
where activation of cortical structures
by PGO waves (Ponto-Geniculo-Occipital Waves)
, which are generated in the pons. The main

objection to this model is that it does not explain
the dreams in No-REM sleep. Finally neurological
abnormalities such as lesions in the brain stem,
that not decrease or block REM sleep, and the
dreams reported by those patients. While lesions
in associative areas like parieto-temporo-occipital,
cancel the generation of dream activity, however
that did not abolish REM sleep. This has generated
the proposal that mental activity known as dream,
is a process in parallel, but independent of the
different sleep phase.
