Characterization of the perception of the family relations of elderly adults incorporated to the grandparents’ clubs

ABSTRACT

Introduction: there is a considerable rate of elderly adults who live in family relations in Cuba. The relations between the elderly adults and their families may vary from one family to another one, taking into consideration some variables such as the structure of the family and the perception that the elderly has about his family nucleus.
Objectives: to characterize the perception of the family relations that the elderly adults who are incorporated to grandparents’ club have in Nueva Paz municipality.
Method: a descriptive transversal study was performed, to characterize the perception of the family relations that the elderly adults who are incorporated to grandparents’ club have in Nueva Paz municipality from September 2011 to March 2012. 23 elderly adults were selected by non-probabilistic sample of intentional type. The information was collected by a semi-structured interview and the perception test of the elders about their family relations. The information was processed by descriptive statistics specially, absolute and relative frequencies.
Results: 47.83 % of the studied families were small, the 43.48 % trigenerational y and the 69.57 % corresponded to large families. The 43.48 % of the elderly adults appreciated very good family relations and the 30.44 % good.
Conclusions: small, trigenerational and large families prevailed. It was more frequent that the elderly adults appreciated very good and good family relations, resulting affected the perception of harmony by living alone, being widow or widower and by family migrations.
