Knowledge of a group of mothers about prevention of accidents at home

ABSTRACT
Introduction: accidents or no intentional lesions represent nowadays one of the main public health problems.Objective: To identify the level of knowledge that mothers of children younger than 5 years old have about prevention of accidents at home.
Methods: a descriptive transversal study was performed in a group of mothers of children younger than five years old from three doctors’ offices of Basic Working Team No.1 at “Luis Li Trigent” University Policlinic in Güines, Mayabeque province from July 1st to December 31st 2013. The universe was constituted by the total of mothers with children younger than five years old (136). Knowledge about prevention of accidents and its relation with age, school level, occupation and marital status of the mothers were studied.
Results: 90 % of the total of mothers as well as the 50 % between 20 and 30 years old had insufficient knowledge about prevention of accidents at home. The highest number of mothers had pre university and university level and the 30 %, y el 35% of them had insufficient knowledge respectively 55 % of mothers who are workers as well as the 35 % of married mothers had insufficient knowledge about prevention of accidents at home too.
Conclusions: as a conclusion it can be stated that mothers with children younger than five years old did not have adequate knowledge about prevention of accidents at home.
