Reasons related to the intention of retirement in health workers of the second level of care

ABSTRACT
Retirement erects as a complex phenomena that implies important changes in working status and roll performances at individual and family levels. It is recognized that many factors affect retirement intentions of ageing workers. The aim of the present study was to describe retirement intentions and related motivations among health personnel. An exploratory study by using qualitative interview technique was made in health workers of Plaza de la Revolución Municipality of Havana, in 2012. Study group consisted of 24 persons (8 physicians, 8 nurses, 8 other non medical staff), 6 people were men and 18 women whose age range were 45 -80 and 45-76 years, respectively. In relation to retirement intention study reveal three main themes: personal, family and job related themes. Ill health, low motivation, satisfaction and recognizing at work, as well as felling stressed, overwhelmed and tired were mentioned as reasons for retirement. Non satisfactory work ability was found in higher proportion among workers intended to retire. Family motivations are mentioned by retirement-oriented workers as well as work- oriented ones. Need for economic support of the family became an important reason to remain working beyond retirement age. These results claim for convenience of flexible organizational regimens and attractive employment alternatives for ageing workers that allow combining personal, family and employment needs.
