ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in Cuba. Ischemic cardiopathies are part of this group; the myocardial infarctions represent one third of the total of these causes of death, 95 % of coronary artery disease has its origin in the atherosclerosis. Once we can identify those people who suffer from subclinic atherosclerosis, we will be able to revert statistics. An observational, prospective, and analytical study was carried out, with the main goal of assessing the relationship among CIMT (Carotid intima-media thickness), cardiovascular risk factors, and coronary artery disease prevalence.
Methods: The sample had a total of 72 patients, who underwent CIMT and coronariography exams. Sex, age, coronary risk factors, the coronariography outcomes analysing if significant coronary illnesses existed or not, number, and kind of the affected artery. In addition, the CIMT medium values of both carotid arteries were studied. A database for statistical processing was designed.
Results: Proportional relationship between CIMT and hypertension, hipercholesterolemy, age, sex, and coronary lesions (without being related to the number or kind of artery) was found. The study offered a sensibility of 75.5 % and a specificity of 71.4 %, with a positive predictive value of 86% for the coronary artery disease diagnosis.
Conclusion: CIMT is a valuable tool predicting coronary artery diseases.
