ABSTRACT
Soft tissue sarcomas comprise a heterogeneous group of rare tumors that originate from embryonic mesoderm. The most common of these is the undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, previously known as malignant fibrous histiocytoma. This tumor was initially described as a tumor of histiocytic origin and it is currently under the category of undifferentiated sarcomas due to its lack of a line of specific differentiation that other malignant neoplasias have. The majority of these tumors can be treated by ample surgical resection. Pleomorphic sarcomas have little metastatic potential but tend to recur locally, making radiotherapy an important tool in the management of these patients pre- and post-surgery. Advances in the multidisciplinary management by oncologists and plastic surgeons, as well as the use of adjuvant therapy have led to an improvement in the prognosis of patients with this pathology.
