Factors related to infection in breast implants. Survey from partners of the Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery

ABSTRACT
During the year 2013 in Mexico, 57,691 breast implant surgeries were performed. We conducted a study with 446 participating surgeons to determine risk factors related to implant infections; 279 surgeons who did not report any infections and 167 who did. We carried out a basic statistical and analytical study with χ
2 and linear regression to determine frequency, risk, reason of verisimilitudes and correlation. We found: infections were not related to the type of implant, the brands with increased risk of infection are scarcely used and the sample size is insufficient to determine the relationship. Acute infection is the most frequent (94.1%) and staphylococci are the most frequently involved. (82.07%) Factors related to the infection of implants are: periareolar access (risk 2.02; p = 0.06) retro-mammary plane placement (risk 2.3; p = 0.011), also prolonged use of drainage is related to infections, with an increase of 8.04% per day drainage. (R = 0.738; constant 8.046; p = 0.03; IC 95) The factors that decrease the chance of infection are: infra-mammary access; (1.41; p = 0.009) implant placement behind the muscle fascia; (1.48, p = 0.001) use of prophylactic antibiotics; (5.676, p = 0.001) antimicrobial use in implants (1.688, p ‹ 0.001). The implant being handled by the surgeons only; (4.051, p = 0.018) and sterilization of instruments in formal means (2.682, p = 0.003). Analysis of these results gives rise to a strategy to reduce infection in breast implants.
