ABSTRACT
Aloe is a native plant from arid regions that has been used as a medicinal plant since ancient times. Its uses on different
pathologies depend on biological issues like the variety species of the plant, and even of cultural issues (traditions and empirical
knowledge). There are more than 360 species of Aloe and there is scientific support for the medicinal properties of only some
of them being the
Aloe vera the most studied and currently marketed. Certain compounds of
Aloe, like polyphenols and
antracenes have beneficial health properties. Many of its beneficial effects on different diseases are associated with their
antioxidant and antiinflamatory response. These beneficial effects have been observed in several studies both
in vivo and
in
vitro. Although there is much scientific support for several of the beneficial effects for
Aloe, there are still many aspects to be
studied to fully understand the mechanisms of the beneficial action of Aloe.
