ABSTRACT
Objective: Describe the management of carotid aneurysms in a limited period of time. A pathology not very frequent even though they are specialized medical centers. Methods: It was a total of 11 cases with carotid aneurysms, from january 1980 to december 2002. There were 9 cases handled by surgery, and two died of sepsis and rupture of concomitant iliac aneurysms before the carotid surgery.
Results: No deaths after the surgical treatment were reported in 12 months of follow-up. One patient developed postoperatory stroke after ligation of the carotid, leading a neurological sequela in an infectious carotid aneurysm case. The cases with neurological symptoms and the local compression were diminished after the surgical treatment.
Conclusions: This kind of diseases represents a challenge for the vascular surgeon due to its infrequent presentation. The knowledgement of the pathology and the surgery techniques available in the Surgical Center and by the Surgical team are basic to obtain good results.
