ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare two biomaterials (bioplastic and fascia autologous graft) as grafts for closing of tympanic perforation in an animal model.
Material and method: An experimental, prospective study was made including 26 male adult guinea pigs, in the hospital center of third level, Bioterio of Universidad Panamericana. Group 1 (cases, polyurethane): left ear (n=26). Group 2 (control, abdominal rectus muscle fascia) right ear (n=26).
Results: We obtained similar rates of closing with both materials. Histological analysis showed different qualities between both grafts.
Conclusions: Bioplastic is a biomaterial that may be used as graft in tympanoplastias. More studies are needed to assess its efficacy and effectiveness, and to corroborate a proper profile of safety for its clinical use.
