ABSTRACT
Cryptococosis is a severe opportunistic mycotic disease caused by
Cryotococcus neoformans, an encapsulated, yeast-like fungus. The two varieties
Cryptococcus neoformans var.
neoformans (serotypes A and D) and
Cryptococcus neoformans var.
gatti (serotypes B and C) are responsible for human disease. It occurs by inhalation of the microorganism present mainly in pigeon’s stools. It causes a pulmonary infection and disseminates to other organs, meninges and central nervous system causing meningoencephalitis; it can also affect skin and other viscera. Cryptococosis affects immunosupressed patients, especially patients with AIDS. This paper reviews the present state of the disease with special attention to the clinical features, diagnostic approach and treatment.
