ABSTRACT
Background: Care indicators in the ICU allow assessing their efficiency and quality.
Material and methods: In a descriptive, prospective and observational study of six months, post-surgical patients admitted to ICU were evaluated according to the following variables: specialty, elective or emergency surgery, classification by admission criteria and types I to IV of priority groups, average length of hospital stay, reason for admission; mortality, and distribution by gender and age groups.
Results: 72 patients with X¯ and SD 53.9 ± 19.2 years old; gender distribution: 52.8% male and 47.2% female; specialty distribution showed predominance of general surgery with 30%, cardiac surgery 14.2%; emergency surgery 55.5%, and elective 44.5%. Distribution by type of priority: group I, 80.55%; group II, 11.12%; group III, 1.38%; and group IV, 6.95%. The reason for admission showed: shock in its different forms, 33.2%; respiratory failure in 30.8%; X¯ and SD days in hospital was 5.06 ± 3.2; mortality of 15.28% with index of 0.25.
Conclusions: The post-operative patients admitted to the ICU come mainly from the general surgery service, with no difference between genders, the main reasons for their income are shock and acute res piratory failure, with an average stay of 5 days, and mortality of 15%.
