Effect of rearing conditions (extensive vs semiestabulated) on semen collection in goats via artificial vagina

ABSTRACT
In order to evaluate the effect of rearing conditions (extensive vs. semi-estabulated) in semen collection of goats with an artificial vagina, eight two year old sexually experienced “Criollo” bucks were tested. Four of these animals were raised under extensive conditions, while the rest were raised under semi-estabulated circumstances. All animals were individually exposed to an estrous female for 20 min or less if they ejaculated before this period during 8 training sessions two times per week. Test order was changed each day alternating animals according to raising conditions. The four bucks raised under semi-estabulated conditions ejaculated in the artificial vagina during their first training session, while none of the animals raised under extensive conditions (n = 4) ejaculated during any of the eight training sessions. Results suggest that animals raised under extensive conditions may develop high levels of fear in a sexual setting with close human presence, and therefore, reducing sexual motivation at the time.
