ABSTRACT
Introduction: Serum albumin value is an important indicator in morbidity and mortality of critically ill patients.
Objective: To know the relationship between low albumin serum value and the malnutrition patient’s evolution with serious illness.
Method: Prospective and longitudinal series of cases study in children entered in intensive cares who presented acute malnutrition, during the period of three years, where the Pediatric Hospital called "Dr. Angel Arturo Aballi" was the investigation rector center. A total of 152 cases were evaluated.
Results: The lowest values of serum albumin were presented in children with ≥ 3 months of age (45,5%), with initial illness in a period of time ≥, 3 days (57,7%), in those children where the reasons of admission were the digestive infections (43,8%), breathing ones (43,2%) and sepsis (60%), this last with significant difference (p= 0,033) among all admission causes. In the mean time, low albumin serum value was more frequent in cases with complications (53,5%) and those with large hospitalization (57,7%), with p values similar to 0.012 or 0,029, respectively. The highest mortality (78,9%) was presented in the children with inferior albumin serum values reaching high statistical significance (p= 0,0007).
Conclusions: Low serum albumin value was associated with sepsis, large hospital permanency, presence of complications and mortality.
