ABSTRACT
Mucormycosis is caused by fungi of the class Zygomycetes, order Mucorales and is an opportunistic infection. Risk factors are diabetes mellitus, malignant neoplasms, mainly of the hematological type, organ transplants, use of cytotoxic and immunosuppressive drugs. After the rhinocerebral, the pulmonary localization is in second place.
Two cases are reported: 1. Male, 57 years old with diabetes mellitus of 10 years evolution necrotizing pneumonia. He died and the autopsy showed extensive haemorrhagic necrosis, Gram positive bacterial colonies and wide non-septate hyphae, identified as mucoral, in the upper right lobe. 2. Male, 43 years old, diabetic, with pneumonia, right hemithorax opacity, perfusory gammagraphy showing complete destruction of the right lung. Pneumonectomy was performed and the lung showed lesions similar to case 1. No specific treatment was given, he died and the autopsy revealed no mycotic lesions in the left lung, however, dissemination to spleen, kidneys and thyroid was observed.
