ABSTRACT
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) results in events of breathing pauses and hypopneas associated with awakenings, excessive daytime sleepiness, and snoring. One of its main symptoms is excessive daytime sleepiness.
Objective: To determine if the oxygen saturation (SO
2) decreases and Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) increases with the increase in OSAHS severity.
Material and method: A retrospective study that compared SO
2 measured by means of polysomnography (PSG) and the score on the ESS in 529 patients, divided according to OSAHS severity in mild, moderate and severe. Means between groups were compared by analysis of variance and the association between measures was performed using Pearson’s correlation.
Results: A decrease of SO
2 was observed with the increased in OSAHS, as well as an increase in ESS scores. We did not observe a correlation between SO
2 and ESS.
Conclusions: OSHAS severity produces a decrease in SO
2 and increased in excessive daytime sleepiness, without correlation between both. Further research is required to determine the nature of correlation between SO
2 and ESS.
