ABSTRACT
Introduction.
Erectyle disfunction is the persistent incapacity to achieve or maintain an erection long enough for sexual function to be considered normal.
The association between this illness and Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is well known. In Latinamerica the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in
diabetic patients is of 52%. According to the type of diabetes, ED is found in 32% type 1 and 46% in type 2. The objective of this study is to
determine the prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetic patients older than 40 years who receive attention at Family Medicine Unit (FMU)
171.
Material y Methods.
This is a descriptive transversal study with non-probability sampling. The sample calculation was made using EPINFO v.6, with confidence
interval of 95%. We applied the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIED-5). SPSS 19 was used for statistical analysis. The
2 description of qualitative and quantitative values was made using frequencies and proportions, χ
2 was used as well.
Results.
The sample included 95 male patients older than 40 years with Diabetes Mellitus. 89.5% (n=85) of the participants with erectile
dysfunction showed the following scores: mild 32.6%, mild to moderate 31.6%, moderate 11.6%, severe 13.7%. Of these patients, 54.1%
(n=46) had been diagnosed with DM for over 5 years, ages ranged from 40-79 years in 94.1% (n=80), high school education level was present in
25.8% (n=22), 89.4%(n=76) were married, and 56.4% (n=48) had no complications related to DM. The following x2 were obtained for
evolution time p=0.350, age p=0.733, education level p=0.324, marital status p=0.333, complications related to DM p=0.681.
Discussion.
A high prevalence of ED was seen in diabetic patients older than 40 years. There were no statistical significance differences for the presence or
absence of ED with evolution time, age, education level, marital status or complications.
