ABSTRACT
Introduction: Lung cancer is the second mortality cause in Mexico, therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine the degree of diagnostic certainty of histology and cytology studies used at the National Institute of Respiratory Disease, where a sample quality control method is also needed.
Material and methods: All cases of bronchial lavage, brushing and biopsies registered in the Pathology Department of this Institute from 1989 to 1998 were reviewed.
Results: of 1,094 cases, 430 were females and 664 were males. The most frequent was adenocarcinoma with 501 cases. The sensitivity and specificity of bronchial lavage and brushing was 62, 58, 65 and 54% respectively, and its predictive value 83 and 80%. The correlation coefficient was 97%
Conclusions: The three studies in conjunction are one of the most sensitive methods to identify pulmonary neoplasms.
