ABSTRACT
Introduction: inadequate lifestyles represent changeable risk factors for
cardiovascular diseases; their detection in a given population is required to carry
out interventional strategies.
Objectives: to characterize lifestyles and to identify blood hypertension and
overweight in adolescents of "Antonio Guiteras" neighborhood in Habana del Este
municipality.
Methods: cross-sectional and descriptive study of adolescents aged 10-17 years in
the period of September 2010 through July 2012 in Habana del Este municipality.
Demographic, anthropometric, clinical, food consumption, toxic habits and physical
activity variables were studied. The adolescents were interviewed and their blood
pressure, weight, height and waist circumference were measured after informed
consent.
Results: two hundred and seventy six adolescents were studied, being the 10-14
years-old group (59.4 %) and Caucasians (60.9 %) predominant regardless of sex.
In this group, 23.2 % were overweighed and obese, 2.9 % hypertensives and 14.5
% pre-hypertensive. Daily sweet (72.8 %) and fried (43.5 %) foodstuff
consumption prevailed but vegetable and fruit intake was low. Alcohol consumption
was observed in 34.4 % of adolescents —early age of onset— 7.2 % were active
and 56.2 % passive smokers; smoking habits of parents and children were closely
associated.
Conclusions: overweight and blood hypertension values seen in studied
adolescents agree with those of other domestic research studies; nutritional habits
and physical activity were deficient; and onset of toxic habits occur at early ages.
