ABSTRACT
Sinusitis is a very frequent ailment of the upper airways, which is often badly managed by the primary care physician due to a poor understanding of its pathogenesis. In 1967 and 1978, Professor Messerklinger discovered the mucociliary flow of the paranasal sinuses, which revolutionized the medical treatment of acute sinusitis and the surgical procedure for chronic sinusitis, both aimed at reestablishing the drainage and ventilation of the sinuses involved. Therapeutic management is based on antibiotics, decongestants and mucolytes: antihistamines should be avoided.
