ABSTRACT
Introduction: The knowledge of prognostic factors in cranioencephalic trauma is very important to future prognosis in patients affect for this illness, constituting basic goal of different ways or prognostic models employed to realize predictions.
Objective: To determine the prognostic factors of cranioencephalic trauma most related to mortality.
Methods: It was done an observational and analytic study with all the admitted patients of the intensive and intermediate care unit in "Dr. Carlos J Finlay" Hospital in Havana City in a period of a year with the diagnosis of cranioencephalic trauma at the moment of arrival to the hospital. The sample was formed by 41 patients and for the statistical analysis it was used the determination of the relative risk.
Results: The majority of the patients belonged to male sex and the greatest mortality occurs in men older than 45 years and in female cases. The traffic accidents were the main cause of cranioencephalic trauma and the brain contusions and / or hemorrhagic areas were the most common lesions found. The 29.3% of the patients died and the relative risk was superior to 1 in female cases, the low blood pressure and the lower scoring of 8 points in Glasgow ´s coma scale.
Conclusions: The majority of the patients were of male sex and the ages were among 16 and 45 years old. The factors related to mortality were: the punctuation under 8 in Glasgow ´s coma scale, the female sex and the low blood pressure. The 70.7 % of the patients survived after the trauma and the greatest number of cases had a scoring over 9 in Glasgow ´s coma scale.
