ABSTRACT

The ultimate aim of clinical disease prevention is to avoid or at least diminish exposure of individuals and community to known, avoidable “causes” by proper intervention, thus preventing the onset of disease. Another objective is to modify the natural history of disease by prompt detection and treatment during the preclinical stage, thereby preventing the clinically manifest, advanced disease (secondary prevention). A wide range of measures is available to prevent diseases: the identification of health risks and prompt application of corrective measures; public education to encourage health maintenance and promotion; legislation against tobacco; health and safety at the working place; the search and identification of early asymptomatic stages of disease for treatment. This latter measure can be applied by: case detection by application of adequate tests during a visit to the physician, and screening with tests of proven effectiveness to healthy subjects with an organized program. The present report attempts to disseminate information on available preventive measures to help physicians in the decision of which to use in the different client categories during daily practice.
