ABSTRACT
Objective: Evaluate the incidence and etiology of traumatic spinal fractures with or without spinal cord injury during January 1st 2000 to December 31st 2001 in a hospital of the social security. Material and methods: It is a retrospective, transversal, descriptive and observational study, were all patient of the Mexican Institute for Social Security who belong to “Lomas Verdes” Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital, with traumatic spinal fractures with or without spinal cord injury were included. Regard their age or gender. Results: 276 patients were included, 219 males (79%) and 57 females (21%) with a mean age of 36 years old. The incidence was 1.79 x 100,000. Etiology, the first cause were falls from hight (50.5%) followed by car accidents (34.5%) and finally aggressions (15%). The most common level of injury were lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine. 27% of the patients had associated injuries being head trauma the most common. 28% were treated conservative and 72% with surgery. We found that 58% of the patients had partial or complete spinal cord injury and complete neurological deficit (Frankel A) in 35% of patients. Conclusion: The incidence that we found in our series is similar that the one reported in other third world countries which have the same problems as our country. The same thing happens with the etiology of these injuries which are closely related with the social and economic activity of each country or region.
