ABSTRACT
Objectives: To show our experience on surgical treatment of Scheuermann´s disease. Material and methods: Fifteen patients with Scheuermann´s Kyphosis had surgery for progressive Kyphotic deformity of 50° or greater. All of them were men, from 1994 through 2001. The Cobb method was used to measure the deformity on X-ray. This measure was made before surgery, immediately after, and two years later after surgical procedure. All patients had anterior release with posterior spine arthrodesis with segmental compression instrumentation. It was used a cast corset after surgery. Results: This is a retrospective study of 15 patients of mean age 17 ± 8.15 years (9-45) with severe Scheuermann´s Kyphosis. The mean preoperative thoracic kyphotic curve was 79.53° ± 10.46 (68°-100°). The mean postoperative thoracic kyphotic curve was 32.73° ± 10.10. 45.6 ± 16.78° was the average correction (p .005). Cast corset was used an average of 11.4 months after surgery. 40% of patients had late complications and 27% underwent instrumentation withdrawal. The mean thoracic kyphotic curve after two years of surgery was 37.06° ± 9.69 with loss of correction of 4.6° p › .05. Conclusions: Patients with Scheuermann´s disease who underwent surgical treatment had good results and significant loss of correction did not occur in the fusion area.
