ABSTRACT
The prognosis of life for a patient in cardiac arrest is directly proportional to the training of staff caring for the patient and inversely proportional to the time between cardiac arrest and initiation of effective CPR. Unfortunately the theory and practice CPR is not included in the training of health personnel who work at the first, second and even a third level of health.
Objective: To determine the knowledge of CPR in health personnel working in an emergency department.
Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study, knowledge of CPR 122 doctors and nurses in the emergency department through a questionnaire of 20 questions was evaluated. Causal associations with the χ
2 test were determined.
Results: 89.3% of respondents showed unsatisfactory knowledge. The academic training of personnel is associated with the level of knowledge (
p = 0.000), emergency medical specialty showed an increase in knowledge of CPR (
p = 0.000).
Conclusions: There are serious gaps in knowledge of CPR in the health staff of the emergency department of our unit. It is necessary to start courses and workshops in basic and advanced CPR certified by the American Heart Association.
