Esthesioneuroblastoma: case report and review of the literature

ABSTRACT

The esthesioneuroblastoma or olfactory neuroblastoma is an infrequent, malignant neoplasm, which is derived from the olfactory neuroepitelium localized in the upper third of the septum, the cribiform plate and the superior turbinates. It has intracraneal extension in 30-40% of cases. It represents 1.2% of malignant tumors. The clinical manifestations are non pathognomonic and include: nasal obstruction, epistaxis, hyposmia, headache and exophtalmos. The diagnosis is made by pathological analysis and immunostaining. Commonly patients present in advanced stages or Kadish C. The treatment is mainly surgical, the gold standard being craneofacial resection followed by radiotherapy. We present the case of a 22-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with esthesioneuroblastoma. He was treated by surgical resection in conjunction with the neurosurgery department.
