ABSTRACT
Background: Clinical Laboratory is the physical space where several medical, scientific and technological procedures are developed. It represents a valuable medical tool for health evaluation (preventive medicine) and disease management (healing medicine). Physicians request tests for a single reason. They need reliable information in order to take proper decisions. Clinicians observe several manifestations on patients, including signs and symptoms that must be translated and quantified in order to make diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
Objective: To review clinical microbiology history in order to evaluate present resources and to estimate future applications.
Methodology: This document is a review of previously published medical literature.
Results: Microbiological studies have the particular characteristic of etiological approach. In consequence they allow specific treatment with a significative impact on humanity. Microbiology labs have evolved for several centuries from the microscope invention to the immunology, genetic engineering, and molecular biology development, that has been expanding while covering bacteria, fungus, parasites, and virus.
Discussion: Each day it is becoming more evident that clinical diagnosis is the cornerstone of medical attention, since prognosis and treatment depend heavily on it. Depending on recent scientific and technological developments better tests are developed constantly. Even when clinical laboratories play a central role on clinical diagnosis it should be understood that this is a multidisciplinary process where physicians suspect, departments support and laboratories reject or confirm. During the introduction of new tests, older ones become obsolete and should be discarded depending on benefits and limitations An important labor of clinical laboratory professionals is to promote a better and not only an expanded use of lab tests.
