Osteotomy an elongation in brachymetatarsia

ABSTRACT
The fourth metatarsal hypoplasia is a patology affecting the march and foot esthetic aspect in patients almost totally are female. The following trial is for evaluate esthetic and functional results in patients with 4th metatarsal hypoplasia, treated by bony elongation, by external fixation. This study was in to the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopedics “Lomas Verdes”, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, México. Between March 2000 to March 2001, all female, between 8 and 12 years old, with hypoplasia of 4th metatarsian, this patients were treated by osteotomy an elongation with miniexternal fixation to 4th metatarsal, using bars which allowed us to elongate the bone by 1 mm daily, for nexte 3 weeks. A follow up was performed weekly, with special attention in esthetical and functional results. The results obtained is average elongation was 1.7 cm. With appearance and function adequate at treatment concluded. This results study present observance were similar to tose published world wide. We consider the 4th metatarsal osteotomy and elongation with mini external fixation a good surgical treatment for this patology.
