Effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on pelvic floor evaluated by electromyographic study in women with superficial dyspareunia before and after treatment

ABSTRACT
Background: Dyspareunia is defined as a complaint of persistent or recurrent pain or discomfort associated with attempted or complete vaginal penetration during sexual activity. The pelvic floor muscles play an important physiological processes in the role of voiding, defecation and sexual function. Overactivity can lead to various disorders as dysfunctional voiding or defecation, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction such as dyspareunia. There is a difference in the electromyographic in women diagnosed with superficial dyspareunia before and after treatment with pelvic floor rehabilitation.
Method: Intra-group clinical trial. Women with superficial dyspareunia received pelvic floor rehabilitation with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Electromyographic was assessed before and after treatment.
Results: 16 women with superficial dyspareunia were studied. Statistical technique T test for independent samples was used. Intra-group differences were statistically significant.
Conclusion: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is an effective rehabilitation technique for the treatment of superficial dyspareunia.
