ABSTRACT
Background: Rhinosinusitis is a health problem that is increasing. According to meta-analysis studies there is up to 90% of radiological abnormalities in patients without symptoms of disease, and 34% of patients with symptoms suggestive of rhinosinusitis, but with negative CT.Objective: To compare the relationship between major and minor criteria and CT findings in the diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis.
Material and method: A retrospective study was done with a survey based on major and minor criteria to 40 patients in the hospital outpatient department of Otorhinolaryngology, General Hospital of Mexico, with symptoms suggestive of chronic rhinosinusitis. Each survey was compared with the findings of computed tomography. Data were recorded in Excel spreadsheet and statistical analysis was performed in SPSS. The same survey was conducted to 40 patients (control group) with nasal obstruction as cardinal symptom and CT had no alterations.
Results: It was observed that only the symptoms as purulent discharge at the time of examination, aural fullness and cough, when there were not present had a predictive value in relation to condition tomographic symptom. In this report, 11 cases had not CT abnormalities in patients with symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis. But adding the cases and controls, there were 51 patients without tomographic disorders, but with symptoms suggestive of chronic rhinosinusitis.
Conclusions: The major and minor criteria were not predictive in the diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis when comparing cases and controls symptoms vs CT findings.
