ABSTRACT
Background: There are factors associated with poor prognosis and death in patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) that the physician should know to take the necessary measures in the care of patients.
Objective: To determine risk factors associated with mortality in patients admitted to IMSS hospitals in the State of Mexico during the influenza contingency.
Material and method: A case-control study in which records of 53 patients who died of pneumonia were reviewed and matched for hospital survivors with the same diagnosis. Data at entering and clinical development information were collected.
Results: It was established that there was no difference in mortality when any antibiotics, steroids or bronchodilators were administered. Prescription antiviral at entering of patients is associated with lower mortality, p‹ 0.05. More time before admission and the presence of multiple pulmonary infiltrates were associated with increased mortality, p‹ 0.005. Other risk factors associated with death were the use of mechanical ventilation with RM 46.6 (95% CI 8.41-258.0) and pneumonia with multiple bindings, RM 5.38 (95% CI 1.28-22.50).
Conclusions: Risk factors associated with death in patients with influenza-like illness were: not administration of antiviral treatment at entering, male sex, multiple pulmonary infiltrates or any chronic disease.
