ABSTRACT

Introduction: the Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis (ANUG) is an inflammatory, painful and destructive illness that can affect both the marginal gum and the relating papilla, relating it’s pathogenic with possible risks factors. For the nuisances that produces to the patient or for their possible complications they require of the professional's immediate attention and it is considered a dental urgency.
Objective: to determine the behavior of the ANUG and the risk factors related with this affection.
Material and Methods: i was carried out a transverse descriptive study in the dental clinic Guaicaipuro, Guanare, Portuguese, Venezuela. The studied universe was constituted by 30 patients among 15 and 59 years old that were diagnosed with this illness between January and December of 2013. The following variables were studied: presence of ANUG, having the associate factors of risk: the bad buccal hygiene, the smoking habit, the stress and the presence of pericoronal caps, information about school level, residence area and occupation were also included. The information was summarized statistically by means of percentage figures.
Results: the age group that was more affected was that of 15 -18 years. The bad buccal hygiene and the smoking habit were the most frequent risk factors, mainly in the students and in the rural populations. The stress prevailed in the urban areas.

Conclusions: the most affected population was the young masculine one; the bad buccal hygiene and the smoking habit were the more frequent risk factors.
