ABSTRACT
Introduction. Tumors on the carotid body, also known as carotid glomus or carotid paraganglioma;
are tumors growing on the carotid bifurcation that affects mostly women. In our country statistical and
significance date exist only on public health institutions.
Objective. To present a carotid paraganglioma event surgically treated at Uruapan, Michoacán.
Material and materials. The patient was an 18 years old female, with a tumorous mass at the left
carotid bifurcation. She was scanned using tomography and duplex Doppler. The paraganglioma diagnose
was confirmed and it was classified as a Shamblin III. Oncology and the vascular surgery department
proceeded to a bloc resection of the tumor and re-vascularize the internal carotid using the great
saphenous vein.
Results. The patient evolved and presented neuropraxis at the cranial pairs IX and X, and resulting to
a favorable recovery within a month. The patient presented no swallowing problems, no brain damage
and the correct functioning implant was corroborated with a duplex Doppler.
Conclusion. The carotid paraganglioma it a rare tumor among our population. A resection may be
performed at any medical center with adequate diagnosis resources and qualified medical personal,
trained to deal with this kind of condition. The vascular surgeon must try to reduce time on cerebral ischaemia,
when re-vascularization is needed from Shamblin III condition, to prevent a permanent brain
damage.
