ABSTRACT
In the present study the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex was used for the detection of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae biotype 1, serotype 1, and results were compared with bacterial isolation. Lungs from 100 clinically healthy pigs were collected at a slaughterhouse, 50 had apparent pneumonic lesions while 50 had no gross lung lesions. All samples were examined by histopathological, bacteriological and immunohistochemical methods. Predominant microscopic lesions were bronchopneumonia (30%) and interstitial pneumonia (20%). The immunohistochemical technique identified the presence of A. pleuropneumoniae in 75 lungs, whereas bacteriology only detected this microorganism in 11 samples. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference (P ‹ 0.001) in the rate of bacterial identification. Immunohistochemistry may be a good alternative in the routine diagnosis of swine pleuropneumonia.
