1931 Caprio’s hepatectomy. The bases for the future

ABSTRACT

In the history of hepatectomy, Latin-American pioneers are scarcely mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon literature. Perhaps an exception the report of Uruguayan surgeon Gerardo Caprio, who published a resection of the left lobe of the liver in 1931, during a dark period in the progress of ideas about this surgical technique, after the strong impulse in the last 30 years of the 19th century. This communication analyze the surgical personality of Caprio their publication, basis of knowledge and experience that propelled him to perform the hepatectomy and surgical principles applied which would consolidate in the world just 20 or 30 years after.
