ABSTRACT
Background:Sinusitis in infants is a pathology that the physician must have in mind because the maxillary and ethmoid
sinuses develop around the fifth month of pregnancy, become pneumatized after birth and from that moment on they can
acquire such disease.
Case: A 39-day old male infant presents with rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, thick, abundant, yellow-toned, postnasal
discharge, a temperature of 38.5
oC, with x-rays of paranasal sinuses showing opaque ethmoid and maxillary sinuses and
a computed axial tomography confirmed the opacity in ethmoid sinuses. Posterior to treatment, CT scan showed well
pneumatized ethmoid sinuses.
Conclusion: It is convenient to suspect the diagnosis of sinusitis in infants when they present a suggestive ar ray of
signs and symptoms given that 0.5% up to 5% of patients that suffer acute upper respiratory tract infections can develop
sinusitis.
