ABSTRACT
Objective: Determine prevalence of medical kit in home, exposure to television and other associated factors affect this practice.Methods: A prospective, qualitative, quantitative, with interviews in 1008 households in Oaxaca, urban and suburban population, it were requested related events about self-medication, home kits, medicine boxes, notes or purchasing tickets in the span of a year preceding the interview. It used various statistics coefficients, confidence intervals for the coefficients of the regression ecuación (CI), correlation coefficient (r), table of analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Results: 884 of the pacients practice the self-medication (83.7%); of these, 411 persons viewed these products on television by more than 7 times, with an R2 of 0.78; 102 consume by recommendations from family and friends, 147 due to lack of financial resources, 102 for own initiative; only 66 attend by health services, all statistically significant variables. The 81% of the survey population has a medicine cabinet; the most frequently medicaments used are the antibiotics, reducing weight medicaments, histamine antagonist and analgesic; the self-medicate are more in teenagers and schoolchildren.
Conclussion: The television announcements, with other factors, might be inducing drugs indiscriminate consumption. In study prevalence of 83.7%. It is necessary to continue insisting on health education.
