ABSTRACT
Emphysematous pyelonephritis is a potentially deadly necrotizing infection. It is characterized by the formation of gas within or around the kidney. Xantogranulomatous pyelonephritis is an infrequent complication of longstanding urinary tract obstruction followed by chronic infection. This entity's main feature is the destruction of renal parenchyma and substitution of it by lipid rich macrophages. Both of them have been associated to diabetes mellitus. We present an unusual case with the rare pathologic association of xantogranulomatous and emphysematous pyelonephritis with histologic confirmation in a patient with diabetes mellitus.REFERENCES
