ABSTRACT
Oxygen derived free radicals are normally generated in many metabolic pathways. These radicals may interact with various cellular components and induce cell injury. However, there is an efficient antioxidant system that protects the organism against free radical-induced cell injury. Oxidative stress results when there is a serious imbalance between generation of free radicals and the antioxidant capacity. When free radicals exceed the antioxidant capacity, cell injury causes diverse physiologic and pathologic changes. This paper reviews the mechanisms involved in the production, classification and effects that oxygen stress causes in the organism, as well as in the protective mechanism. Finally, analytical techniques and biochemical markers used to monitor oxidative stress are also described in this paper.
