ABSTRACT
Introduction: The sudden infant death syndrome, redefined in 1991, is as old as man-kind, and has been described since biblical times. Its incidence has declined in the last twenty years; however, it is still one of the leading causes of death in children under one year of age in developed countries. One of the important requirements for its diagnosis is conducting a complete necropsy.
Objectives: To define the information needed to justify the diagnosis and pathogenesis of this syndrome, describe the related risk factors, and the pathomorphological
Methodology: Panel.
Development: Its concept, the pathogenic and epidemiological aspects, measures to protect children in this vulnerable period of life, the differential diagnosis and the anatopathological alterations found in those with sudden infant death syndrome were stated. The results of a study on the causes of out-of-hospital death in infants under one year of age in Havana from 2003 to 2007 were reported. Reference was made to a methodology that is recommended for the anatomopathological study of the heart.
Conclusions: Current studies on sudden infant death syndrome allow the clarification of its diagnosis, knowing which child is at risk of dying from this condition and taking action to reduce its incidence.
