ABSTRACT
Background. The spinal column is the most frequent localization of skeletal metastasis that occurs in 40% of cancer
patients. The most common primary tumors are breast, prostate and lung, with 39.3%, 23.5% and 19.9% respectively
with a slight prevalence shown in males. The thoracic spine seems affected in 70% of cases, followed by lumbar
and cervical sites.
Objective. To determine the functional results of surgical treatment in patients with thoracolumbar
fracture with vertebral metastatic disease in Hospital Juárez de México.
Material and methods. In a longitudinal
retrospective study applied in the Orthopedics Department, Spinal Column Fellowship, in Hospital Juárez de
México, from January 2012 to December 2014; to 10 patients with vertebral metastatic disease, with neurological examination before and after the surgical procedure; different functional scales were used like the Oswestry
Disability Index, Tomita Score, Visual Analogue Pain Scale (VAS) and the adapted ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS) to
classify each patient.
Results. Improvement in the neurological examination was observed in 90% of patients with
the following ranges: AIS, 20 to 80%. VAS, 60 to 80%. ODI, 39.13 to 65%.
Conclusions. The functional improvement
of patients that underwent surgical treatment was determined through AIS, VAS, ODI scales, showing encouraging
results and pointing out the importance of surgical treatment, by identifying risk factors like age, gender and spine
lesion.
