ABSTRACT
Mucosal pigmentation is not uniform and there are different
grades of chromatic variation both in physiologic and pathological
conditions. Such variations are determined by various
factors including origin and location of the pigment, keratinization
of the epithelium, number and activity of melanocytes,
vascularity and underlying submucosal tissue (bone, cartilage
and/or muscle).
Pigmented mucosal lesions pose a diagnostic challenge,
since their origin is rather diverse. Mucosal melanoma has a
very poor prognosis. Dermoscopy and reflectance confocal
microscopy are useful non-invasive diagnostic techniques for
the timely diagnosis of benign and malignant mucosal lesions of
melanocytic origin.
