ABSTRACT
The lip is an organ of complex anatomical relationships, great
physiological import and significant social, cosmetic and sexual
implications. However, this cosmetic subunit is often targeted
by malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell
carcinoma and melanoma, the last two of substantial metastatic
potential.
Timely detection of these tumors is of the essence, not only
in terms of oncologic treatment but also for subsequent reconstruction.
However, given its complexity, the lip is a challenging
surgical area. Consequently, this paper reviews the anatomy of
the lip subunit, classifies its defects by extent and thickness, and
suggests reconstruction strategies.
