ABSTRACT
Introduction: Acute breath failure syndrome is an acute frequent inadequacy attributable to a wide variety of causes in the intensive care services.
Objective: To determine the incidence and mortality of this entity, in the intensive care units at "Dr. Eduardo Agramonte Piña" Hospital, in Camagüey city.
Method: Retrospective and descriptive study. The clinical files of the patients entered in the service between January 2005 and January 2010 that completed the
approaches of acute breath failure syndrome of the consent American-European were revised.
Results: In the period of study 2 219 patients entered of which 3.3% (n= 75) completed the approaches of acute breath failure syndrome, 78.6% (n= 59) of
them was due to direct lung cause and 21.4% (n= 16) to indirect cause. Most of the patients entered with an oxygenation index minor than 15. A 32 % of global
mortality was reported; the group of age more affected was from 7 to 11 years.
Conclusions: The results obtained show that the incidence of acute breath failure syndrome is lightly inferior to what specialized literature refers about the general units, likewise the general mortality behaves. As for the causes of the syndrome, it is observed that in this research prevail the direct causes and within them, the infectious.
