ABSTRACT
Cutaneous horn is a conical, exophytic, keratosic and well circumscribed tumor, it is similar to an animal horn. It is just a cutaneous manifestation but not a true pathologic diagnosis and this can occur in association with, or as a response to a wide variety of underlying benign, pre-malignant, and malignant cutaneous diseases.
Material and methods: A retrospective study was performed at the General Hospital «Dr. Manuel Gea González» and in the Institute of Dermatology and Skin Surgery in Guatemala from January 1st, 1994 to December 2011. We included all histopathological reports with a diagnosis of cutaneous horn.
Results: We found 60 patients with the diagnosis of cutaneous horn at the General Hospital «Dr. Manuel Gea González» and 62 cases in the Institute of Dermatology and Skin Surgery; 88 and 85.4% respectively of the cutaneous horns appeared on sun-exposed areas. The principal lesions associated with cutaneous horns were actinic keratoses (43.3 and 54.8% respectively), cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (30 and 9.6% respectively), and viral warts (56.2 and 71.4% respectively).
Comment: Cutaneous horn is most frequent in women; it usually appears in sun exposed areas of elderly people. Due that there is no specific clinical characteristic that determines the possible precursor lesion in cutaneous horns, once they are excised it is necessary sent them to the histopathologic analysis.
