ABSTRACT
Alopecia areata is a polygenic autoimmune disease characterized by self-limited asymptomatic alopecic patches, non-inflammatory and scarring. The true prevalence in the population is not well-known, as most studies include hospital samples. The pathogenesis is unknown, it is a heterogeneous syndrome multifunctional polygenic, caused by genetic and environmental factors. The clinical significance of alopecia areata resides in affecting the quality of life that produces and comorbidities associated with it.
