ABSTRACT
Background: In population-based studies have reported a prevalence
of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) more than 20% in the U.S.A. and Spain.
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the number
of risk factors (RF) associated with MS in resident physicians of the
Family Medicine Specialty and analyzes their cardiovascular risk (CVR).
Material and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study
was designed, using a non-probability convenience sampling. A total of
37 physicians were included. Their socio-demographic characteristics,
medical history, lifestyle and biochemical parameters were analyzed.
Results: The prevalence of MS was 10.81% (95% CI, 0.81 to 20.82),
higher in males (16.67%, 95% CI -4.42-37.75
vs. 8.00%, 95% CI
-2.63-18.63). In both sexes, the most prevalent CVRF was hypoalphalipoproteinemia
and the prevalence of CVR (5-10%) was 2.70% (95% CI
-2.52 to 7.93).
Conclusions: Our data indicate a low prevalence of MS in physicians
and suggest that CVR tables must include clinical and sociodemographic
variables, as a key preventive strategy in primary care.
