ABSTRACT
Lichen myxedematosus (LM) is an idiopathic cutaneous mucinosis of unknown ethiology.
In 1953, Montgomery and Underwood described 4 clinical variants: a generalized variant, also denominated scleromyxedema, a papular one, a localized or generalized lichenoid form with plaques and a urticariform with plaques variant.
According to a more recent review 2 clinicopathological variants are described: a papular and scleroderma-like generalized variant and a localized variant.
Here we report a case of a patient with breast carcinoma and mucinosis. An atypical LM variant was diagnosed. The cutaneous lesions, the mucinous material deposition and fibroblasts in upper dermis, the absence of monoclonal paraproteinaemia and clinical hypothyroidism made the diagnosis possible.
