ABSTRACT
Objective: identify the risk factors and the frequency of cardiovascular disease among persons recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with patients hospitalized in the Diabetes Care Center of Bayamo, Granma, from January 2011 to July 2012. The study universe was the 683 patients admitted to the institution during the period. The study sample was the 150 type 2 diabetics with less than 6 months since diagnosis.
Results: 100% of the patients had at least one cardiovascular risk. The most common were overweight and obesity in 135 cases (90.0%), metabolic syndrome in 100 (66.6%) and arterial hypertension in 99 (66.0%). At diagnosis, 24 patients (16%) had the following cardiovascular conditions: 11 (7.3%) ischemic cardiopathy, 4 (2.6%) stroke and 13 (8.6%) peripheral arterial disease. More than one complication was detected in four of them.
Conclusions: risk factors have a high frequency among type 2 diabetics from the territory. This may explain why a considerable proportion of cases already have cardiovascular complications at diagnosis.
