ABSTRACT

In a prospective, observational and cross-sectional study was analyzed the clinical and laboratory behavior of 70 cases of gastroenteritis by rotavirus in infants previously immunized with 2 doses of Rotarix at 2 and 4 months. The diagnosis of the cases was performed by positive fecal latex. 42 of the patients (60%) were under one year, 54 were enrolled with vomiting (77.1%), 64 were enrolled with diarrhea (90.1%), 24 reported having had fever (30.4%), 70 mentioned malaise (100%), 6 reported abdominal distension. 80 report have had dehydration; mild dehydration in 24 cases, moderate in 40 and severe in 6 cases; in the coprologic study all the patients (70) had pH of 5 or less and positive fat in feces (3 to 4 crosses); 12 were hospitalized and the rest were managed as outpatients with oral rehydration therapy, the mortality was of 0 %. Rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants previously immunized generally has a clinical behavior similar to that described in children without this type of vaccine.
